surf town along the Pacific ocean called Huntington Beach, California. Cycle Zombie Scotty Stopnick is pacing his garage like a Vietnam vet as the morning dew fades with each inch of sunrise. A day prior the parking lots of Long Beach lay victim to the Cycle Zombie's lurking for deals and new wheels. Today is a new day, and a day in the life. Beyond the walls of Scotty's mid century ranch sits a 1976 Chevy G10 van titled Agent Orange. Cold to the start within minutes she's purring like a kitten. Boards in the back, a cooler, skateboard, and we are off. Minutes down the road is the beach but the trip get's delayed when a homeless man sleeping on the curb is spotted. Agent Orange flips a turn creeping harder then a molester with a lifetimes supply of candy. The police roll up simultaneously as if they were us with crew cuts and a daily supply of donut diet about to examine the situation. The golden rule is when cops show up, bail. Further up the road parked along the curb in a white 1962 Ford Econoline sits brothers Turkey and Chase. Into the ocean they go. After an hour of battling natures crotch everyone paddles in. The sidewalk becomes a pow wow of banter and rock throwing as everyone argues what is for lunch. Tacos are on the menu but where to eat is debated for a good half hour with each idea ending in diarrhea talk. These guys make it seem like shitting your wet suit is on the menu today and if you at least get lucky with finding cheap taco's your going to go broke on toilet paper. Lunch turns into shooting the shit about generations past and making fun of the fat guy next door in his chair sunbathing in the strip malls rays of subterranean dip shit's. Skateboarding a backyard pool is next on the list but first a bathroom stop at Jokers skate shop. The myth of the infamous Huntington taco's turns out to be a true story. We drive for 10 minutes and pull into suburbia where we enter a backyard paradise and the pool party starts. After skateboarding has taken it's tole and the sun has evaporated any energy left both van's part ways and we head back to Scotty's house. In the garage lays a time warp of chopper history past. The garage is so full you can barely move without catching your jeans on foot pegs. Each wall is a spectacle containing collages of 1980's skateboard's and a circus of swap meet nicknacks. Panhead's, Shovelhead's, Triumph's, a fresh Knucklehead motor; it is a motorcycle enthusiasts dream come true. This collection of past decades gives you that feeling of being in your dad's boots before he met your mom and she gave birth. Those times back in the 1960's-70's being fresh out of Vietnam and raising hell up and down the streets. In the front of the garage sits Twisted Sister, a 1959 Harley Panhead he just finished building a week prior. While all of the other bikes are soaked in sweat and grease she stands out like Cinderella and is a show class machine who is begging to be broke in. Before Scotty takes her out for a drive he pulls out a trike that was scavenged out of a dumpster and rips it up and down the neighborhood spending most of the time on two wheels helmet less. If this is his last ride it seems like the perfect one to go out on. Turkey and Chase live 15 minutes down the freeway in Costa Mesa which is next on our map. The freeway to Costa Mesa is a wide open race track and Twisted Sister has taken the route of the simple life. No speedometer. I am in tow doing 90 miles an hour and I still cant keep up with Scotty. I mention this to him once we land and he calls me on bullshit saying he was only going 60. I'll go with my speedometer's prediction. Turkey and Chase are next door neighbors sandwiched in between a a pregnant woman's mobile home and a baseball field. Chase has converted a thrashed old garage into a living space that feels like something you would see in the back of a 1970's Easy Rider or Playboy. Harley wheels, Hell's Angels photos, knicknack's, the list goes on. Turkey on the other hand has decorated his house more sparse with mid century furniture, a drum set, and a Harley parked in the back pantry. Like all days today has come to an end. With the sun starting to set the Cycle Zombies roll the bikes out of the driveway. Chase kicks his 1978 jockey shift Shovelhead and rolls down to the stop sign. Turkey kicks over his 1948 Panhead and is in tow with Scotty close behind. Down the road and up around the bend the boys are off. It contained super 8 footage from a geography called Salton Sea which was littered with broken concrete and looked like an abandoned post war paradise. After some research I found out the geographic location was 30 miles from Mexico and originally was developed in the early 1900's to create irrigation on a small scale level for agriculture until the great flood of the Colorado river in 1905 blew out these small canals and filled the Salton Sink creating the massive lake know as Salton Sea. In the 1950's people began to inhabit the shores with dreams of it becoming Palm Springs. The 50's and 60's were scattered with great floods which washed out the towns along the shore and the agricultural run off of fertilizers along with the salt mine concentration under the lake began to kill its inhabiting fish leaving them to litter the lakes shores. Surrounding towns eventually began to rebuild further off of the grid leaving the damage to bake in the sun and be long forgotten. A decade after the 90's I was still stuck in my teenage mindset with a fascination for the place so I headed south to finally enter its womb. For the trip I loaded a white utility van with tools, an assault rifle, and a sawed off shotgun hoping to leave the desert intact and to leave my mark. A felon friend came along for the 4 hour journey south from Los Angeles. In America the law states that a felon is not to be around guns. California law rule's also say that sawed off guns and assault rifles are illegal. This never came crossed my mind as a big deal until the road abruptly stopped at a USA border patrol checkpoint. The cops opened the van and put a K9 dog inside to inspect. "You boys are good to go" he announced as we were sweating bullets wondering how he couldn't see the guns sitting on the shelf. Back on the road south the desert whispered vacancy until a dark shape in the distance intruded the palette with a lake larger than Jesus himself. Bombay Beach right turn read the sign. A dead coyote carcass baked in the sun directly at this point while a trailer park lay ahead in the distance. Bombay Beach already had the mystical methamphetamine euphoria which turned into paranoia when I entered the Ski Inn for a beer. Its inner appearance looked as if had been abandoned since the 1960's and three bar patrons appeared as decor mangled and mentally ill while every word that they spoke was undistinguished as if this place had created its own lingo. With a strange vibe in the room worse then a bad hit of acid we pushed on. The whole town of Bombay Beach is dirt roads littered with garbage and trailer homes which appear to be so thrashed one wouldn't consider them liveable. Dead fish permanently stained the air as I drove from the bar and came across an old man in his yard. He could tell I was foreign and said "what the hell are you doing here?" I responded "just passing through." He then asked me if I had any beer I could give him in which I responded "I do not." "What are you doing here?" I asked. His response solidified the foundation of the town and the predictions I had when entering. "I am hiding from the government. I've been here 25 years. You boy's have a nice day." Upon scouting the streets named by the alphabet I noticed everyone must be sheltered down in their trailers dodging the blistering heat which was doing damage on me. I can see why living here would drive one insane. The desert sucks your mind and soul and the desolation complicates the problem. These people weren't born insane the geography chiseled them this way. Next on the map was a town further south and two miles inland from the lake called Niland. Niland is much like Bombay Beach visually with past era decor and destruction. The town was slithering with the local population outside. Each person I took spectacle to was either drunk, on drugs, or yelling obscenities to one another. The local mini mart had a steady movement of traffic all exiting with cases of beer. God Bless America decorated one fence with an American flag soaring high above. Patriots of the land of the free. Main street splits the small town in half and takes one to the outskirts where the painted masterpiece that has made this place famous lays. Just before leaving the town I stopped at the last house on the left to get out and stretch. Over the fence I could hear a father beating his child and yelling "you little piece of shit I outta fuckin' kill you". Salvation mountain is a mystical experience. Leonard Knight dedicated the later years of his life to promote his ideal that "god is love". The mixture of clay cement and paint has stained the desert and drawn gypsies from all over to inhabit it's premises on the backside of the mountain with a dwelling of motor homes and trailers
